What Is DOTS Score?

The DOTS score also known as the DOTS coefficient or BVDK DOTS score is a bodyweight-adjusted strength metric used in powerlifting to compare athletes across different weight classes fairly. It was developed by the German Powerlifting Federation (BVDK) and adopted internationally as a more accurate alternative to the Wilks formula.

The name DOTS stands for Dynamic Objective Team Scoring originally developed for team competition scoring but now used universally for individual relative strength comparison.

Where absolute strength measures how much you lift in kilograms, relative strength measures how much you lift relative to your bodyweight. Two lifters with the same absolute total but different bodyweights will receive different DOTS scores and the lighter lifter typically scores higher because they produced more strength per kilogram of bodyweight.

The Official DOTS Formula — How It Works

The DOTS formula applies a gender-specific polynomial equation to your bodyweight to produce a DOTS coefficient. That coefficient is then multiplied by your powerlifting total to give your final score.

The formula:

Denominator = A + (B × BW) + (C × BW²) + (D × BW³) + (E × BW⁴)

DOTS Coefficient = 500 ÷ Denominator

DOTS Score = DOTS Coefficient × Total Lifted

DOTS vs Wilks — Which Formula Is More Accurate?

The DOTS vs Wilks debate is the most common question in powerlifting scoring. Here is an honest, direct comparison.

What Is the Wilks Score?

The Wilks formula was developed by Robert Wilks then CEO of Powerlifting Australia in the 1990s. It was the standard cross-bodyweight comparison metric in powerlifting for over two decades and is still recognised by many lifters and coaches worldwide.

The Wilks formula uses a sixth-degree polynomial equation applied to bodyweight to calculate a coefficient. While it served the sport well for years, analysis of modern competition data revealed systematic weaknesses particularly at the extremes of the bodyweight spectrum.

In 2020, Robert Wilks published an updated formula called Wilks 2 (also called Wilks 2020) that corrects several of these issues. This updated version is not the same as the original Wilks formula used before 2020.

The Verdict — When to Use Each Formula

Use DOTS when:

  • You compete in USAPL, USPA, or any BVDK-affiliated federation
  • You want to compare yourself to the OpenPowerlifting database
  • You lift at or below 59 kg or above 100 kg (DOTS is significantly more accurate at these extremes)

Use Wilks when:

DOTS vs IPF GL Points

The IPF GL (GoodLift) formula is the scoring system used by the International Powerlifting Federation and all its affiliates, including Powerlifting America. It replaced the original IPF Points formula in May 2020.

The key difference between DOTS and IPF GL is that IPF GL uses a logarithmic equation rather than a polynomial, and it also has specific parameters for different events full power, squat only, bench only, and deadlift only. This makes it more granular but also more complex.

In the 2020 Kopayev et al. evaluation of powerlifting scoring formulas the most comprehensive independent analysis of this topic IPF GL ranked first and DOTS ranked second for overall scoring accuracy across all weight classes.

The coefficient decreases as bodyweight increases meaning heavier lifters need proportionally larger totals to achieve the same DOTS score. A 59 kg lifter gets a coefficient of approximately 1.05, while a 120 kg lifter with the exact same total would receive a coefficient of approximately 0.72. This is not a flaw in the system it reflects the genuine diminishing returns in relative strength that occur as absolute bodyweight increases.

This is why weight class optimisation is a legitimate and widely used competitive strategy. Competing at the lowest weight class you can sustain without losing meaningful strength can improve your DOTS score by 10–20 points for the same total lifted.

The DOTS scoring system has been adopted by a growing number of federations worldwide since the BVDK introduced it. Knowing which federation uses which formula matters for competition preparation and for understanding which score to prioritise when tracking your progress.

Masters Lifting and Age Coefficients

DOTS itself does not account for age. For masters lifters (typically defined as age 40+ in most federations, with specific age categories varying by federation), additional age-based coefficients are applied on top of the DOTS score.

The most common age adjustment used alongside DOTS is the McCulloch coefficient a separate multiplier that increases with age to account for the natural decline in strength capacity. USAPL and USPA both apply McCulloch coefficients for masters-category best lifter scoring.

How to Improve Your DOTS Score

Your DOTS score has two variables: your total lifted (which you increase through training) and your bodyweight (which you optimise through weight class strategy). Here is how to approach both.

1. Identify and Attack Your Weakest Lift

The most direct route to a higher DOTS score is a higher total. And the fastest way to increase your total is to focus your training on your lagging lift the one where you are furthest behind your own potential.

Most lifters can identify their weakest lift intuitively, but the numbers confirm it. Compare each lift to strength standards for your bodyweight and experience level. If your squat and deadlift are at the Advanced tier but your bench press is at Intermediate, the bench is your fastest path to total improvement.

A 10 kg increase in your total adds approximately 6–8 DOTS points for most lifters in the 74–93 kg range.

2. Run a Structured Peaking Block Before Testing

Your DOTS score reflects your best competition total not your training weights. Lifters who run a proper peaking block (typically 4–6 weeks of progressively reducing volume while maintaining or increasing intensity) consistently outperform their training totals on competition day.

A well-executed peak typically adds 2–5% to a lifter’s total compared to unpeaked testing. At a 500 kg total, that is 10–25 kg representing 6–15 additional DOTS points.

3. Optimise Your Competition Weight Class

Because the DOTS coefficient is higher at lower bodyweights, competing at the lightest weight class you can sustain without compromising performance can meaningfully improve your score.

The calculation that matters:

If dropping 3 kg of actual body mass (not just water) reduces your DOTS coefficient by 0.02 but leaves your total unchanged, your DOTS score improves. If it causes your total to drop by 20 kg, it does not the total loss outweighs the coefficient gain.

The rule of thumb: water cuts of 2–4% of bodyweight (within 24–48 hours before weigh-in, where federation rules permit) do not meaningfully impair strength performance. Cuts requiring genuine tissue mass loss of more than 4–5% of bodyweight typically reduce performance enough to negate the coefficient advantage.

4. Use Periodised Programming — Not Constant Heavy Work

Lifters who plateau on their DOTS score almost always share one characteristic: they train at near-maximal effort year-round without structured variation. Periodised programming alternating blocks of higher volume at moderate intensity with lower volume at higher intensity consistently produces greater long-term total increases than constant heavy training.

Run a 12-week hypertrophy/volume block followed by a 6-week strength block followed by a 4-week peak. Recalculate your DOTS score after each full cycle. When your score plateaus across two consecutive cycles, this is the signal to reassess either your programming, your weight class, or your technique.

5. Track DOTS Score Monthly — Not Just Total

Many lifters track only their absolute total and miss an important signal. Your DOTS score can stagnate or even fall while your total rises if your bodyweight is increasing faster than your strength. This pattern is common in bulking phases and indicates that muscle gain is lagging behind fat gain.

Conversely, your DOTS score can improve even when your total stays flat if you drop a small amount of bodyweight during a cut while maintaining strength. Monthly DOTS tracking separates genuine relative strength improvement from total-driven noise.

For most modern applications, yes. DOTS was calibrated using competition data from 2010–2018, making it significantly more accurate for contemporary athletes than the original Wilks formula, which used 1990s data. DOTS is also more accurate at the extremes of the bodyweight spectrum particularly for lifters under 59 kg and over 110 kg, where the original Wilks formula produced systematically biased results.

The DOTS formula does not differentiate between raw and equipped lifting the same formula applies to both. However, equipped lifting produces systematically higher totals than raw lifting, meaning equipped lifters will always score higher than raw lifters of the same bodyweight using the same formula. For this reason, DOTS comparisons between raw and equipped lifters are not meaningful. Always compare within the same equipment category.

The coefficient is highest at the lowest bodyweights a 59 kg male lifter receives approximately 1.05, while a 140 kg male lifter receives approximately 0.63. However, a higher coefficient alone does not produce a better DOTS score. Your total also has to support it. DOTS was originally developed for team scoring in the BVDK. Team DOTS scores are calculated by summing each individual team member’s DOTS score.
